How deep do you need to remove mortar for proper repointing?
A minimum depth of 20–25 mm is required to achieve an adequate mechanical and chemical bond with the new mortar. Anything shallower is often called 'skim repointing' and typically fails within one to three years, as the thin mortar layer has insufficient cross-section to resist the thermal and moisture stresses of a Toronto winter.
Can you repoint just a small section of my wall?
Yes, spot repointing is a standard service. We assess which areas show active failure and prioritize those zones while leaving sound mortar in place. That said, if more than 30–40% of the wall shows signs of deterioration, a full-face repoint is usually more cost-effective than returning for multiple spot repairs over successive seasons.
What is the difference between repointing and tuckpointing?
The two terms are used interchangeably in Canada and the US. Technically, 'tuckpointing' refers to a decorative finish technique using two-colour mortar to create the illusion of very fine joints, but in everyday trade usage — and in Toronto's masonry market — both terms simply mean removing old mortar and installing fresh mortar. When contractors say tuckpointing, they mean repointing.
How long does repointing mortar take to cure before I can get it wet?
New mortar should be kept damp (misted) for the first two to three days to support proper hydration, then protected from rain for a further three to five days while it achieves initial set.
