Surface Preparation

Scratch Coat Application
A 10–12 mm scratch coat of mortar is applied and scored horizontally before final set to create a mechanical key for the finish coat. This two-coat system is more durable and less prone to cracking than a single thick application.
Finish Coat & Detailing
The finish coat is applied to 6–10 mm thickness, floated or rodded to the specified texture, and detailed at the top edge (typically a drip edge or metal bead) to prevent water tracking behind the parging at the grade line. Control joints are tooled at intervals appropriate to the wall length to manage thermal movement.

How long does parging last?
Well-applied parging on a properly prepared substrate in a sheltered exposure typically lasts 15 to 25 years. Parging in aggressive environments — constantly splashed by grade-level drainage, in full freeze-thaw exposure, or applied over a poorly bonded substrate — may require maintenance in 8 to 12 years. Acrylic-modified mixes extend service life in high-exposure conditions.
Can you parge over existing parging?
Only if the existing parging is sound, firmly bonded, and shows no active delamination or crumbling. Parging applied over failing material will fail at the same rate as the substrate beneath it. We test adhesion by tapping the surface with a hammer — hollow sounds indicate delamination zones that need to come off before new work is applied.
