Masonry Retaining Walls in Toronto, ON

Engineered brick, block, and natural stone retaining walls built to hold grade, prevent erosion, and enhance your property. Licensed & insured masonry contractor serving Toronto and the GTA. Free estimates.

Masonry retaining walls are one of the most structurally demanding applications in residential and commercial construction — they resist active lateral earth pressure, hydrostatic pressure from retained moisture, and the dynamic loading of anything on or behind the retained grade. Elite Toronto Masonry designs and builds brick, concrete block, and natural stone retaining walls throughout Toronto and the GTA, applying proper engineering principles to drainage, footing depth, batter, and reinforcement to ensure walls that perform safely over decades, not years.

What's Included in Our Retaining Wall Construction Service

  • Site assessment including soil type, slope, load from above-grade structures, and drainage conditions
  • Footing excavation below the frost line — minimum 1.2 m in Toronto
  • Gravel and perforated drain tile installation behind the wall face for hydrostatic pressure relief
  • Concrete block (Allan Block, EP Henry), natural stone, or brick wall construction
  • Geogrid reinforcement for walls exceeding 900 mm in exposed height
  • Weep hole installation at regular intervals for drainage
  • Cap stone or cap block installation and bedding
  • Backfill and compaction in controlled lifts

Signs You Need Retaining Wall Construction in Toronto

Sloped Properties and Grade Changes

Retaining walls allow you to create level usable space from sloped terrain — expanding patios, driveways, garden areas, and play spaces that would otherwise be unusable on a sloped lot.

Erosion Control and Slope Stabilization

Unretained slopes erode in heavy rain, particularly on Toronto lots where ice melt creates significant spring runoff. Masonry retaining walls stabilize the grade and prevent soil movement onto neighbouring properties.

Existing Wall Failure or Lean

Retaining walls that have begun to lean, crack, or separate at the base indicate that the drainage system has failed and hydrostatic pressure is building behind the wall face. Failed walls require full demolition and rebuild with proper drainage remediation — not just re-facing.

Our Retaining Wall Construction Process in Toronto

01

Structural Design & Footing Excavation

For walls over 1 metre in exposed height, we assess soil bearing capacity, slope geometry, and any surcharge load from structures above the wall. The footing is excavated to 1.2–1.5 m below finish grade to clear Toronto's frost line, ensuring the wall base remains stable through freeze-thaw seasons. A compacted granular base is installed before footing construction.

02

Drainage System Installation

Hydrostatic pressure is the number-one cause of retaining wall failure. Before the first course of block or stone is laid, we install a continuous perforated drain tile at the footing in a gravel drainage envelope. Weep holes are spaced at 1.8–2.4 m intervals in the wall face. This drainage system eliminates the pressure that would otherwise push the wall over.

03

Wall Construction & Backfill

Block or stone courses are laid with appropriate setback (batter) per the system specifications — typically 15–25 mm setback per course for segmental block. Geogrid reinforcement is installed at specified heights for walls exceeding 900 mm. Backfill is placed in maximum 200 mm compacted lifts to prevent overloading of uncured mortar joints.

FAQ

Retaining Wall Construction FAQs — Toronto Masonry Answers

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Toronto?

In Toronto, retaining walls over 1 metre in exposed height typically require a building permit. Walls over 2 metres almost always require a permit and, in many cases, a structural engineer's stamped design. We recommend checking with Toronto Building Services for the specific requirements on your property.

Why do retaining walls fail?

The vast majority of retaining wall failures are caused by inadequate drainage — water accumulates in the retained soil behind the wall, creates hydrostatic pressure, and pushes the wall over. This is why a proper drainage system (perforated drain tile in gravel, weep holes) is essential and non-negotiable on every wall we build.
