Excavation & Base Preparation
Correct base depth is the single most important factor in interlocking paver longevity. Residential driveways require a minimum 300 mm granular base; patio areas need 150–200 mm. All base material is compacted in maximum 100 mm lifts using plate compactors to achieve 95% standard Proctor density. Skimping on base depth or compaction effort is the most common cause of premature paver settling in Toronto.
Bedding Sand & Paver Setting
A 25–40 mm layer of coarse bedding sand is screeded to precise grades, checked for drainage slope (minimum 2% away from structures), and the paver field is laid. Borders and edge courses are set first to establish the field geometry, with field pavers cut to fit at all edges using a wet saw.
Edge Restraints, Compaction & Jointing
Aluminium or PVC edge restraints are installed along all free edges and spiked into the granular base to prevent lateral migration. The paver field is compacted using a plate compactor fitted with a rubber pad to avoid surface damage. Polymeric jointing sand is swept into the joints, compacted again, and activated with water to create a semi-rigid joint that resists weed germination and ant erosion.

How thick should a driveway interlocking base be?
For residential driveways subject to standard passenger vehicle traffic, a minimum 300 mm of compacted Granular A base is required. For occasional heavy truck access (delivery vehicles, moving trucks), 400 mm is recommended. Anything less in Toronto's frost climate will settle and heave.
How long does an interlocking driveway last?
